History of zoos: For many years people have kept animals for different purposes like for work, Warfare, food and entertainment. Most early zoos had little or no concern for the needs of the captive animals. The main aim of early zoos was to display the largest number of animals in a small space to attract a lot of visitors. There wasn't much understanding of animal behaviour and habitat so animals were kept in very small, dirty cement floor cages. Because they were in small, confined and not properly kept environments their behaviour was usually weird or abnormal or strange. Zoos have come a long way since then. Today zoos usually lower the number of animals in their collection and have themes like African savanna, Wild Asia, rainforest and backyard to bush. Also more than one species are allowed to be exhibited together e.g zebras and giraffes (but animals like zebras and lions should not be on exhibit together). A whole lot of planning goes into making new exhibits. The designers need to understand the behaviour of the animal before they start to plan. There are many compromises that should be considered like public viewing, funding and maintenance.
